Irena Martens was born 1941 in Hamburg, Germany where she was Educated and received a Diploma in Publishing. She moved to Italy to pursue her interest in Art and studied at the Brera Art School in Milano. While in Italy, she exhibited her work in Milano and Venice.
After having been offered a show in NYC – 1966 – she traveled to America for the first time. She met her husband Jack Silverman and decided to stay. She continued to exhibit her work on a regular basis, receiving good reviews from the NY Times, Art News amongst others. Her sculptures were included in a Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition touring the U.S.. After Irena and her husband bought an 18th Century Farm which they restored, she started dividing her time between West Stockbridge where a barn serves as her Art Studio and her apartment in NYC. In addition to making artwork she is an avid gardener and likes to collect antiques.
